Squeezing Time for Art: Science and Art

00:00:16;16 And, I get the privilege today to interview my PhD advisor, Peter Walter.
00:00:21;21 on his scientific and extra-scientific hobbies and creative endeavors.
00:00:27;14 So, hi, Peter.
00:00:29;19 Hi, David. I think you should be in the lab.
00:00:32;11 But, I'm glad you find other uses of your time.
00:00:37;13 I'm working on the next paper. It'll be out soon.
00:00:40;06 So, I want to start basically by introducing what you do,
00:00:45;26 which is mostly science, but a little bit on the side getting to do creative projects
00:00:50;16 with your hands, doing wood working and metal working.
00:00:53;21 Doing sculpture and functional stuff around the house.
00:00:57;17 How did you get your start doing wood and metalworking?
00:01:01;11 Well, I basically started when I was growing up.
00:01:06;11 I always loved to do little projects, and I did a lot of little handiwork
00:01:13;00 with my Dad. We had a little room in our apartment in Berlin
00:01:19;01 that was really, really the tiniest room in the apartment,
00:01:24;11 maybe 6 feet by 8 feet or something.
00:01:27;01 And we used it to do all sorts of projects.
00:01:31;15 It was a room that was ok to make a mess and to leave projects half finished to stand around.
00:01:37;12 And, I just loved creating things with my hands.
00:01:41;20 Well, how did you get your start doing science?
00:01:43;03 That actually started with my Dad as well. He had a little chemist's shop in Berlin,
00:01:48;21 and they were selling all sorts of herbs and chemicals and soaps and stuff.
00:01:57;13 And, I got fascinated by the chemistry of mixing things together,
00:02:04;09 making them explode... take an oxidant and a reductant, you can create amazing things.
00:02:09;07 So, it was the pyrotechnical aspects of chemistry that really got me excited as a young boy.
00:02:16;21 Have you ever had an idea... has your mind ever wandered
00:02:19;20 to science when you're actually crafting something?
00:02:23;22 Of course! The two things are not separate.
00:02:27;25 And often, building things are repetitive tasks.
00:02:31;11 You sit there for hours, sanding something, and that time is not wasted.
00:02:36;06 Your neurons are firing left and right, and you put other things together.
00:02:40;00 It's a very relaxing exercise.
00:02:41;25 So, I think having a passion that you can pursue outside of the lab
00:02:45;22 is really important for keeping yourself focused on science.
00:02:50;04 Oh, absolutely. When we were living in New York, I did a lot of photography,
00:02:55;11 simply because of the surroundings. There are beautiful things
00:02:59;11 you can photograph in New York.
00:03:01;07 But, when I worked in the lab myself, I had a lot of manual satisfaction...
00:03:08;13 doing experiments. I really loved the detective work of designing experiments
00:03:14;10 and tickling out the last little secret out of Mother Nature.
00:03:18;06 And now that the lab has grown, and I'm basically not at the bench anymore,
00:03:25;19 I sit all day in the computer and talk to people.
00:03:29;28 So, I think I have fulfilled that need and find balance
00:03:33;23 between the intellectual exercise and doing something with your hands.
00:03:37;26 Both sides benefit from having creative outlets.
00:03:44;09 So, you have a wonderful shop here in your house. How did that get started?
00:03:48;08 What was your first piece of equipment that you had here?
00:03:51;13 And how has it taken shape and evolved over the years?
00:03:54;03 Well, let me step back one step further.
00:03:56;22 When I came to the States, I spent 6 years in Manhattan.
00:04:02;10 We were basically living in a little box.
00:04:05;05 So, this kind of art form of doing woodworking was completely out of the question.
00:04:12;20 Because you just didn't have the space where you could make.
00:04:18;24 Woodworking is a dirty exercise.
00:04:21;21 So, then when we moved to San Francisco, I had three requirements for a house.
00:04:28;17 We wanted a fireplace, we wanted a garden,
00:04:31;08 and I wanted a garage.
00:04:32;23 And the garage basically turned into a woodshop. We evicted the car,
00:04:38;27 and the car is sitting in the driveway
00:04:41;05 and we built a little woodshop and bought a lot of used equipment
00:04:48;15 and eventually bought a bit more fancy complete set of doing things.
00:04:56;00 So, I never took any formal training in cabinet making.
00:04:59;06 It's all trial and error. Lots of error.
00:05:02;01 I want to ask you about some of the particular specific pieces
00:05:04;29 that you have around the house.
00:05:06;01 Can you talk about the stained glass piece up on the stairs?
00:05:09;14 That was a wonderful little project that I did together with Patricia, my wife.
00:05:14;14 When we moved into the house, we built this wall, in which the glass window is now,
00:05:21;12 and it looked very ugly just having a wall there,
00:05:24;11 so we decided to penetrate it to bring light into both spaces.
00:05:29;15 So, it was our first and only stained glass piece
00:05:35;09 we ever made, and we had quite fun exploring it, and it turned out fantastically.
00:05:40;04 What about the tree in the bathroom?
00:05:43;13 The tree in the bathroom. Well, we experimented a lot with lighting
00:05:47;19 in the upper floor, so we put the sky light in, and if you have such a nice skylight,
00:05:52;22 plants are happy there.
00:05:55;20 So, it's a little bit... the bathroom is designed a little bit with Japanese architecture in mind
00:06:02;01 where you find a combination of natural elements and geometric elements.
00:06:09;13 So, can you tell us about this endeavor you have right behind you here,
00:06:14;18 where it looks like you somehow busted through the wall to create a little habitat.
00:06:19;04 I grew up in Germany, and all the houses are stone, so living in a wooden house
00:06:26;13 gives you a lot more opportunity. So, basically what we did...
00:06:30;04 A friend of mine, we just took a chainsaw to the wall, we went through,
00:06:35;12 cut this hole, put a little plant window on the outside,
00:06:38;12 and then built this little display nook here.
00:06:43;23 It's just a very warm feature.
00:06:47;19 One of the nice aspects, at least for me, being in the lab
00:06:49;17 is getting to see some of the gifts that you craft for our annual holiday party.
00:06:55;00 How did that tradition start?
00:06:56;26 I think it's nice to give something personal, rather than store-bought.
00:07:02;09 That's generally true.
00:07:04;28 It's a nice personal gesture to think of a present that's befitting the person.
00:07:14;01 I've done a number of different things.
00:07:16;07 This thing I'm most proud of is a time machine.
00:07:21;03 Again, because it relates so nicely to the science we do...
00:07:24;02 the most precious thing we have is our time.
00:07:28;20 And this machine makes more of it. You just take this clock and squeeze it. Out drips time.
00:07:34;20 And then you have a bottle of it to use for whatever gives you rewards and satisfaction.
00:07:43;07 The fountains in the garden are beautiful.
00:07:45;27 What was the order that you put them together, and can you describe that process?
00:07:51;05 I love flowing water. It's wonderful.
00:07:56;00 And landscape design. I think a wonderful example is the Alhambra Granada in Spain.
00:08:01;26 So, it's the center of Islamic culture. It's a palace with lots of water features
00:08:08;18 left and right, trying to build some water features into our garden... it's very relaxing,
00:08:15;09 sitting next to flowing water.
00:08:17;08 The ball fountain... I was at a scientific meeting -- a conference in Santa Fe
00:08:24;09 and Tommy Kirchhausen and I went to a gallery, Stone Forest.
00:08:30;12 And they have wonderful cast or stone features.
00:08:36;03 And then we had a big issue, because you suddenly get this crate
00:08:40;25 with a round stone ball that weighs some 1000 pounds,
00:08:45;08 and it sits in your garage, in your driveway, and what do you do next?
00:08:50;19 It's a lot of handling logistics of how to then put it out there in the garden.
00:08:59;14 So, I built cranes and carts and tracks to move it out there.
00:09:05;08 So, in part what I love about creating things is to deal with the challenges as they arise.
00:09:12;16 It's a process. The window fountain, again, it has a little Oriental touch in design.
00:09:19;16 It was just sketched during another boring seminar and has pretty dramatic features to it.
00:09:28;24 A little pond underneath with our goldfish.
00:09:33;22 And it's a third... the third generation of that glass plate fountain.
00:09:40;28 The first one was experimental... we tried to pump up the water between two glass plates
00:09:47;28 and it's amazing what 8 feet of pressure does to a glass plate.
00:09:53;19 So, it basically exploded when we tried to pump the water in there.
00:09:58;21 The second one was better. It had copper piping on the side
00:10:05;15 hidden inside the wood, which then blew over in a storm.
00:10:12;11 And, this is the third version now, and it has a valid stainless steel frame
00:10:16;29 hidden inside the wood.
00:10:18;22 So, it looks very delicate, but it's actually quite strong.
00:10:22;25 I guess, starting with woodwork, and now it seems that you're
00:10:27;20 trying your hand at metalwork. So, can you describe a little bit about la Monique?
00:10:32;06 So, la Monique is a sculpture that is eventually going to be a fountain.
00:10:38;24 Woodworking is a subtractive craft, because you take a piece of wood,
00:10:44;16 and you cut away from it, and then you glue a few things together,
00:10:48;29 but there will always be several pieces.
00:10:50;21 Whereas, metalworking, especially welding... You put things together.
00:10:55;02 You form permanent bonds that are synthetic.
00:10:58;02 And I think the two are very... they are fundamentally different,
00:11:02;02 and you can create things in metal you could never dream of building in wood.
00:11:07;14 An expanded range of possibilities one has.
00:11:12;10 The ultimate dream is to combine the two.
00:11:14;09 So, I want to make kinetic sculptures that look wooden,
00:11:18;15 but have metal interiors that are working the wooden pieces
00:11:25;12 in ways that are just not possible with that material alone.
00:11:31;08 So, how did you get your inspiration for la Monique?
00:11:33;10 Well, I was sitting there doodling, and my mind was wandering,
00:11:38;15 and some geometrical shapes that would make some nice sculpture.
00:11:42;17 I think that really the first sketches then evolved.
00:11:47;25 Basically, what she is, she's a little square that then expands,
00:11:51;18 and then you twist the whole thing and turn it over.
00:11:54;12 And then a couple months later, I read a book,
00:12:00;28 The Day of the Triffids, by John Wyndham,
00:12:05;17 a science fiction novel written in the 1950s
00:12:08;29 where plant-like creatures start invading the Earth.
00:12:14;00 And first they're being cultured as sort of these beautifully exotic new plants,
00:12:19;22 and then when everybody has them in their garden, they turn out carnivorous,
00:12:23;07 and start attacking and eating people.
00:12:25;18 It's a wonderful little story, and I thought,
00:12:31;08 "Well, maybe we can turn it into something like that."
00:12:34;05 And, I tried to make the sculpture more and more organic looking,
00:12:39;23 superimposed on the geometrical design.
00:12:44;07 How does your science and your art... how do these two things inform each other
00:12:50;00 and influence? Is there an interplay between the two?
00:12:54;11 Well, I think if you think... what makes you a great scientist is basically
00:13:01;22 doing something well and being creative with what you're doing...
00:13:07;05 Going somewhere out of the box, where people haven't been before.
00:13:12;10 Because, you're basically doing discovery... you have no idea where you're going.
00:13:17;02 So, in a way, working with material and creating something
00:13:21;12 is actually quite similar.
00:13:23;16 I think in both in science and art, we're never going to be
00:13:29;08 fully rewarded by just doing something technically perfect
00:13:34;04 if it's just derivative of what other people have done.
