Talk Overview
In an interview with Ron Vale, Ian Gibbons describes how his initial chemical dissection of the internal structure of Tetrahymena cilia led him to seek and then identify the force-producing ATPase, which he named dynein. Gibbons also describes his key experiment showing that dynein produces sliding between microtubules, which gives rise to the beating of cilia and flagella, as well as his more recent experiments aimed at understanding dynein’s motility mechanism at an atomic level.
