00:00:33;26 The Medical Women's Association of Tanzania
00:00:37;08 is a non-governmental organization of female medical doctors
00:00:42;28 who have joined together to form this organization
00:00:46;09 in order to address the health issues concerning women in Tanzania.
00:00:52;13 Our vision is to see healthy women in Tanzania,
00:00:58;28 and our mission is through improving their health via various programs which we have designed
00:01:07;18 that address women's issues.
00:01:12;05 When we were forming this organization,
00:01:14;16 we thought we have to give back to the communities in Tanzania
00:01:19;20 because during our time, our education has been exclusively free,
00:01:25;23 and we felt the urge or the need for us to give back to the communities.
00:01:30;08 So during the 21 years since this organization has been formed in Tanzania
00:01:38;04 we have managed to conduct various programs
00:01:41;21 that addresses health issues of women, youths, as well as children.
00:01:47;23 In Tanzania we are known for one big program
00:01:53;22 which is known as Breast Cancer Awareness and Screening Campaign.
00:01:59;19 This is a campaign done by female medical doctors
00:02:03;12 via a contribution from the government in terms of finances,
00:02:08;23 as well as from well wishers across the countries
00:02:12;28 who donate money to help us go through regions in Tanzania
00:02:17;27 to do breast cancer awareness, as well as screening
00:02:22;24 for women up to the levels of the villages.
00:02:26;07 Since we have started this program we have managed to screen over 63,000 women
00:02:34;04 across seven regions in Tanzania.
00:02:38;01 And out of those women, we diagnosed about 152 women with breast cancer.
00:02:44;26 What we did thereafter was to facilitate treatment for these women
00:02:50;01 whom we have diagnosed to have breast cancer
00:02:52;14 in the only cancer center in Tanzania, the Ocean Road Cancer Institute.
00:03:00;02 So we are thankful to the Ocean Road Cancer Institute for
00:03:04;00 instituting and facilitating treatment of all the women
00:03:07;08 whom we diagnose through our campaigns.
00:03:10;23 And in these campaigns, we have faced some challenges.
00:03:14;09 For example, myths and misconceptions on breast cancer as well as cervical cancer
00:03:20;21 is very high among women in Tanzania,
00:03:23;23 and that impairs or deters them from accessing medical care
00:03:28;11 because they have tended to equate diagnosis
00:03:32;11 of breast cancer to be equal to death and
00:03:35;22 if one is given radiation or breast cancer treatment,
00:03:41;16 their lifespan tends to be very short.
00:03:45;13 The Medical Women of Tanzania has worked to solve diligently and so hard
00:03:51;04 to try to educate women that this is not the case.
00:03:55;03 Women have to do breast self-examination on a monthly basis
00:03:59;16 so that they can identify any abnormality
00:04:02;26 in their breast in their earliest stage of development.
00:04:07;15 Apart from breast cancer awareness screening,
00:04:10;27 we have also done, in collaboration with the Ocean Road Cancer Institute,
00:04:16;05 cervical cancer awareness campaigns as well as cervical cancer screening
00:04:21;25 through the VIA method.
00:04:26;23 As we understand, cervical cancer is the number one killer for women in Tanzania,
00:04:32;03 and special efforts need to be done to address prevention of cervical cancer through HPV vaccine.
00:04:41;03 The Medical Women's Association of Tanzania has also been involved in coming forward
00:04:48;06 for advocating for HPV vaccine to be given to girls in Tanzania.
00:04:55;13 Apart from this program we have also been involved in another program,
00:04:58;29 which is advocating for a reduction of maternal mortality in Tanzania.
00:05:05;21 As women have known, the current maternal mortality rate is quite high.
00:05:10;05 It is about 424 women dying during delivery per every 100,000 women.
00:05:19;01 This is very high indeed and we as female medics, we feel
00:05:23;09 we have a role to play in order to reduce maternal mortality rates in Tanzania.
00:05:27;07 Our association is also not forgetting young girls.
00:05:31;23 A girl child is an important avenue also to address when addressing women's health issues.
00:05:40;00 We are facing a problem of adolescent pregnancies,
00:05:43;01 and we have gone through secondary schools
00:05:47;15 to advocate for young girls to be more careful
00:05:53;07 about their lifestyle and to avoid early sexual exposure,
00:05:58;17 and so that they can protect themselves against HIV/AIDS and adolescent pregnancies.
00:06:04;00 And during our visits in these secondary schools we also
00:06:08;26 advocate for women, young women, to take science subjects
00:06:16;08 so that they can become scientists in the future.
00:06:20;06 We need more female doctors. We need more scientists.
00:06:24;18 We need more engineers who are female.
00:06:27;06 So we go around secondary schools to advocate for female students
00:06:33;02 to join science subjects in the course of their studies,
00:06:37;05 which will make them join medical universities as well as science degrees.
00:06:43;21 So this is part of the programs which our association,
00:06:49;17 the Medical Women's Association of Tanzania,
00:06:51;25 do in order to address the health of women in Tanzania.
00:06:56;06 We are very hopeful that in the coming years with time as we continue our work,
00:07:02;04 the health of women in our country will improve tremendously.
