Dr. Schachman joined the faculty of the University of California, Berkeley in 1948 and is still teaching there as Professor of the Graduate School in the Department of Molecular and Cell Biology. He has a long history of involvement in public policy related to science. The American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology honored him by establishing the Howard K. Schachman Public Service Award in 2001.
