00:00:07.07 Hi, my name is Sam Brinton.
00:00:09.20 And today I'm going to talk to you about the concept of standing with Science
00:00:13.03 and how we as students have an important role to play in science policy.
00:00:18.22 Now, my background in this is that I helped found and
00:00:22.10 lead an organization called Stand With Science
00:00:24.24 which connects graduate students and other students from across the world
00:00:27.20 to advocate for federal science and research funding.
00:00:30.28 I also, with that organization, helped spawn the National Science Policy Group.
00:00:36.14 The National Science Policy Group connects these graduate students and students
00:00:40.06 to have conversations on their own campus about Science Policy,
00:00:44.17 both in terms of advocacy, in terms of education, and in terms of solutions.
00:00:49.11 But before I get to those organizations,
00:00:52.01 I want to explain why it is important that we actually do Science Policy.
00:00:58.16 Where do the students fit in? And where do I fit in?
00:01:01.12 You see, I am a nuclear engineer.
00:01:04.08 And as a nuclear engineer, we get the same type of questions over and over and over again.
00:01:09.29 Why are you creating nuclear waste and
00:01:11.25 why are you trying to destroy the world with nuclear weapons.
00:01:14.19 And what about Fukushima? Those are great questions.
00:01:18.10 And there are not simple answers.
00:01:20.21 But science policy helps us by creating spaces
00:01:25.02 to have the conversation where a challenge and a solution meet.
00:01:30.08 You see, as a Scientist I can bring forward a possible technical solution
00:01:35.15 and if the policy and I work together, we can make the solution actually applicable.
00:01:42.16 Policy also has the really important space of taking a national interest and moving it forward.
00:01:49.08 So for example, when we fund science, we can help future solutions be possible.
00:01:55.07 The hard conversations of nuclear engineering are what got me into science policy.
00:02:00.19 Now, you may have other great challenges that you are invested in.
00:02:05.23 Those are why you should be involved in this conversation.
00:02:08.21 And those are why the organization that I am going to talk about actually exist.
00:02:13.21 When I got to MIT, I helped with an organization called
00:02:18.07 the Science Policy Initiative, the MIT Science Policy Initiative.
00:02:22.16 Now, SPI was a great group.
00:02:25.23 I got to involve myself in a lot of conversations that I didn't understand that well.
00:02:32.00 For example, when we started talking about GMOs, I am not really great at GMOs.
00:02:37.06 I am more a neutronics kind of guy.
00:02:39.13 But at least I could learn where my science would actually impact their policy.
00:02:45.29 And I could learn how to have a conversation with people that didn't say the same things as I did.
00:02:51.22 When I led a conversation on nuclear waste, they weren't all experts on nuclear waste
00:02:56.09 but we were able to discuss how biology was actually impacting nuclear waste.
00:03:02.16 Where is the radiation science currently standing.
00:03:05.18 And we also got to talk about what the different United States
00:03:09.09 government policy related to different technologies actually impacted us.
00:03:15.14 And that was a great great space to learn about all these
00:03:20.17 different types of science and all these different types of conversations.
00:03:23.23 And that's where I started to figure out that
00:03:26.02 the government was heavily involved in all of the Science that I was doing.
00:03:30.24 We started an organization called Stand With Science there at MIT SPI for one very specific reason.
00:03:39.08 There was this thing called sequestration that was just off on the horizon
00:03:43.23 and we didn't know what was actually going to happen.
00:03:45.29 But we had a conversation with some of our mentors and
00:03:47.29 they said that students needed to have a role in this conversation.
00:03:53.08 When sequestration was happening, it was supposed to be cutting funding across
00:03:57.17 the board for science as well as non-science activities.
00:04:02.08 The problem was that when it started hitting Science activities,
00:04:05.03 this was going to limit the research funding coming in.
00:04:08.02 When you are limiting research funding coming in, you are impacting our professors
00:04:12.22 which are more impacting us as students.
00:04:15.09 Because we are the ones who aren't going to be hired.
00:04:17.03 We are the ones who aren't going to be able to come to school and study.
00:04:19.28 And we are the ones who aren't going to be able to join the field.
00:04:23.02 And that's why Stand With Science was born.
00:04:25.16 Stand With Science had a very simple mission.
00:04:27.13 We want you to stand with federal science and engineering research.
00:04:31.02 A really simple topic.
00:04:32.10 You wouldn't believe how complex it is to start an organization with something that simple.
00:04:37.06 We started with a letter. One of my co-founders was really good at word-smithing.
00:04:42.27 So we wrote a letter to congress and hoped that a few MIT students would help us sign it.
00:04:48.14 After that letter was written, we decided that maybe we could try to share it with a few others.
00:04:54.16 And so we made a video.
00:04:57.05 A great video which I hope you will check out online that started to share why science was important
00:05:03.24 and why we as students cared about our science.
00:05:07.29 We got to tell really small blurbs about what we were working on.
00:05:11.10 We got to share why we care.
00:05:13.19 And my role in all of this started to come with the publicity and social media.
00:05:19.02 I like to be out there and like to really get the message across.
00:05:23.12 So my passion was taking this letter and this video and
00:05:26.18 making sure everyone in the entire country could hear about it.
00:05:30.12 And it worked really really well.
00:05:32.23 After ten thousand signatures, all natural, all coming from word of mouth, we had made an impact.
00:05:40.24 When we visited Congress, they were impressed that students,
00:05:44.28 especially graduate students who were very busy trying to graduate with their thesis writing
00:05:49.24 had taken the time to work on a project like this.
00:05:54.02 It didn't work in stopping sequestration but it did work in bringing our voices forward.
00:06:01.10 And that was what mattered.
00:06:02.18 The National Science Policy Group was formed after Stand With Science.
00:06:08.22 And this is taking my passion for the role of students in science policy beyond just advocacy.
00:06:15.03 You see, as a graduate student I was lucky.
00:06:18.27 I came to MIT and there was a science policy group for me to start studying with.
00:06:23.26 But not every student is as lucky.
00:06:27.03 For some of my fellow students back in Iowa, they didn't have a science policy group.
00:06:31.03 And they started facebooking me and emailing me and
00:06:33.04 saying Sam how do we get one started on our campus.
00:06:36.06 So we formed the National Science Policy Group or the NSPG.
00:06:40.14 And it helps brand new organizations start their own little space.
00:06:47.20 Let's have a lunch. Let's invite a professor.
00:06:49.25 Let's write a letter.
00:06:51.06 Let's do something to the editor.
00:06:53.03 Let's do something to take Science and Policy,
00:06:57.03 give them a little bit of a boost together and see what happens.
00:07:01.17 We also have professional groups and amazingly established groups like SPI
00:07:08.01 who are able to connect with the small groups and help them grow
00:07:12.07 and say well we had this challenge so here is how you can fix it in the future.
00:07:16.09 That's what NSPG is about.
00:07:18.01 It is about taking the Science Policy and getting it across the country
00:07:21.29 so that it's not only just the advocacy for our funding but it's having the conversation.
00:07:28.08 And that's where I will leave you.
00:07:30.18 You see, conversations with our Congressional members are the
00:07:35.01 most important way that we can have a role in Science Policy.
00:07:40.17 This is an image of myself and my senator Tom Hardkin from Iowa.
00:07:46.09 Now he remembers me well because of the red mohawk but
00:07:49.12 he also instantaneously knows that I am probably going to
00:07:52.14 start talking to him about something related to nuclear.
00:07:55.09 Because that's what my passion is.
00:07:56.28 And when I visit him, as I tend to do very often,
00:08:00.10 I make sure that we have a conversation even if it is difficult,
00:08:04.16 even if it is not comfortable, let's have a conversation on
00:08:07.27 where the Science is and where the policy hurdles are
00:08:12.08 and let's try to solve them together.
00:08:14.16 Now he is an expert at policy and I am an expert at nuclear engineering.
00:08:19.02 So together we can make a really great solution.
00:08:23.20 You have to keep the conversation going.
00:08:25.28 You have to keep meeting with your congressional members.
00:08:28.16 Write them an email, meet with their staffers.
00:08:30.21 Do what you can when they come to visit you back in your home state
00:08:34.21 or all the way over there in D.C.
00:08:37.03 Do something to make sure that your voice is heard.
00:08:41.04 It's your turn. Do you see something misunderstood or misrepresented?
00:08:44.27 i.e. nuclear engineering.
00:08:47.15 You need to be courageous, do your studies and
00:08:50.04 make sure that you can represent that challenge and
00:08:53.10 some possible solutions to those around you.
00:08:57.16 You also might see a community in need of collaboration or representation.
00:09:01.24 Just create that system of collaboration.
00:09:04.22 Connect those who have the experiences and those
00:09:07.22 who don't like the National Science Policy Group.
00:09:11.07 So that everyone gets to stand up and gets to walk forward together.
00:09:17.01 What about making an impact on the importance of Scientists and
00:09:20.05 engineers and how we are involved in the processes of policy.
00:09:24.22 That's simple. You do a conversation.
00:09:27.15 Whether it is with your mother explaining what your thesis is.
00:09:30.18 Or whether it is with your teacher thanking them for the education
00:09:34.17 that they gave you and giving them a little boost by
00:09:36.27 maybe visiting their classroom and telling them
00:09:39.12 about the great science that you are working on.
00:09:41.28 Or if it is with your congressional member and telling them
00:09:44.19 that this is something that is important to you and to their constituents.
00:09:49.15 By doing, by being courageous, by starting a system of collaboration
00:09:53.16 and by giving yourself a chance to have a conversation with those around you,
00:09:57.14 you will be able to have a great role in science policy and
00:10:00.22 I believe that you will make a great impact.
